This elaborate pair of Colts commemmorates the construction and completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad in the United States. The tracks ran from Sacramento California to Omaha Nebraska, and were the last section of track that was needed to connect the east and west coasts by rail.
It was a monumental project and a great American achievement.
