Gun engraving is different from jewelry or print engraving because most gun parts are made of hardened steel.

A gun must survive an internal explosion. To do it safely, parts are heat treated to a specific hardness and temper so they can withstand the stresses and high pressures involved.

In addition to hardened steels, the shape and contour of the parts makes them especially difficult to engrave.
