Major Gregory Pappy Boyington was an American Marine aviator. In 1943 he flew a Vought F4U Corsair in the South Pacific and took command of Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-214 - the "Black Sheep Squadron".

In 1944 he was shot down and captured by a Japanese submarine crew and held for more than a year and a half.
